Cleaner Brompton Health and Safety Policy
Cleaner Brompton is committed to providing cleaning services in a way that protects the health, safety and welfare of our employees, contractors, clients and members of the public. We recognise our responsibility to maintain safe working conditions and to prevent accidents, injuries and work-related ill health throughout all cleaning operations.
Policy Objectives
The objectives of this policy are to prevent accidents and incidents, minimise occupational health risks, provide and maintain safe equipment and materials, ensure that employees are competent and trained, and promote a positive health and safety culture across all cleaning activities.
Management Responsibilities
Senior management at Cleaner Brompton will provide appropriate resources to implement and maintain effective health and safety arrangements. Management is responsible for ensuring that risk assessments are completed and reviewed, safe systems of work are developed and followed, staff receive relevant training and supervision, equipment is properly maintained, and incidents are investigated to prevent recurrence.
Managers will lead by example, demonstrate visible commitment to safe working practices and respond promptly to any health and safety concerns raised by staff or clients.
Employee Responsibilities
All employees and contractors must take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their work. This includes following all training and instructions, using equipment and cleaning materials as directed, wearing any personal protective equipment provided, reporting hazards, defects, near misses and incidents without delay, and cooperating fully with all health and safety procedures and investigations.
Employees must not misuse or interfere with anything provided for health, safety or welfare, and must immediately notify a supervisor if unsure about a task or procedure.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
Cleaner Brompton carries out risk assessments for all significant hazards associated with cleaning tasks, including use of chemicals, manual handling, slips and trips, work at height for high-level dusting, use of electrical equipment and lone working where applicable. The findings of these assessments are used to develop safe systems of work and method statements tailored to typical cleaning environments such as offices, residential properties, communal areas and commercial premises.
Risk assessments will be reviewed periodically and whenever there is a significant change in work activities, equipment, substances or locations.
Training, Instruction and Supervision
All staff receive induction training that covers general health and safety responsibilities, emergency procedures, safe use of equipment and substances, manual handling techniques and incident reporting. Task-specific training is provided for specialised activities such as carpet cleaning machines, floor buffers, pressure washers or other powered cleaning equipment.
Supervisors will monitor working practices to ensure that training is applied in practice and will provide ongoing guidance and refresher training as required to maintain competence.
Use of Cleaning Chemicals and COSHH
Cleaner Brompton manages cleaning chemicals in line with recognised control of substances hazardous to health principles. Only approved products are used, and they must remain in their original labelled containers. Safety data information is obtained from suppliers and used to assess risks and define control measures.
Employees are trained on correct dilution, application and storage, as well as on the potential hazards of skin contact, inhalation or ingestion. Personal protective equipment such as gloves, eye protection or masks is provided where indicated by assessment, and staff are required to use it correctly.
Manual Handling and Ergonomics
Many cleaning tasks involve lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling or repetitive movements. Cleaner Brompton aims to reduce manual handling risks by using trolleys, extension tools and lightweight equipment wherever reasonably practicable. Staff are trained in safe lifting techniques and encouraged to avoid overreaching, twisting and unnecessary carrying.
Heavy or awkward items, such as large waste bags or equipment, should only be moved following assessment of the route and with team lifting or mechanical assistance where required.
Equipment Safety and Maintenance
All cleaning equipment, including vacuum cleaners, floor machines, extension poles and electrical tools, is selected and maintained with safety in mind. Pre-use checks must be carried out by staff, and any defects, damage or concerns reported immediately so that equipment can be removed from service until repaired or replaced.
Cables must be routed to avoid trip hazards and kept away from water. Equipment is used strictly in accordance with manufacturer instructions and staff training.
Personal Protective Equipment
Where risks cannot be eliminated by other means, Cleaner Brompton will provide appropriate personal protective equipment. This may include gloves, safety footwear, eye protection, masks or aprons depending on the task and environment.
Employees are responsible for using PPE correctly, looking after it, and reporting any defects or the need for replacement. PPE must not be altered or removed while the risk remains present.
Workplace and Client Site Safety
When working at client premises, employees must respect site-specific rules and cooperate with any additional safety requirements. Work areas should be kept tidy, with warning signs displayed where floors are wet or tasks may affect others, such as corridor cleaning or staircase work.
Particular care is taken in shared and high-traffic areas to minimise slips, trips and collisions, and to ensure that cleaning activities do not create unnecessary disruption or risk.
Emergency Procedures and Incident Reporting
Cleaner Brompton maintains procedures for dealing with accidents, emergencies, spillages and exposure to substances. All incidents, however minor, must be reported promptly to management so they can be recorded, investigated and used to improve safety measures.
Employees must familiarise themselves with emergency exits, fire precautions and first aid arrangements when working at client sites and follow any local instructions provided.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
This policy and associated procedures will be monitored and reviewed regularly to ensure they remain effective and relevant to our cleaning services. Feedback from employees, clients and any incident investigations will be used to improve our health and safety management.
Cleaner Brompton is committed to continuous improvement and expects all staff to contribute actively to maintaining a safe and healthy working environment across all locations where we operate.
